The Treasury of the Principality of Sealand have launched (twond August) a commemorative memorial coin which pays tribute to the founder and 1st Sovereign Prince of Sealand who died on the 9th October 2012 at the age of 91.

Prince Roy, founder of the Principality of Sealand (a micro-nation which lies just 6 miles off the southeast coast of the UK) was born Paddy Roy Bates in August 1921 in the United Kingdom and came to world-wide prominence when in 1967, the former British Army Significant and adventurer claimed as his own territory, a World War II-era dis-employed platform &amp defense tower situated in International waters. The platform was declared sovereign territory by Roy who also proclaimed himself and his wife, Joan Bates as joint sovereign rulers on the twond September – his wife’s birthday. The coin, which is the first official coin authorized by the Principality’s treasury given that 1977, is struck at the Mint in Birmingham to proof quality and is created by Michael Alexander.
