Schenkman receives ANA Zerbe Award

SchenkmanNoted token professional David E. Schenkman is the 2013 recipient of the American Numismatic Association&#8217s Farran Zerbe Memorial Award.

The Association&#8217s most prestigious award is provided in recognition of several years of outstanding, devoted service to numismatics.

He will be presented with the award at the Planet&#8217s Fair of Funds during the ANA banquet Aug. 16 at the Hyatt Regency O&#8217Hare, Rosemont, Ill.

Schenkman has shared his understanding of tokens with collectors given that his 1st article was published in the early 1960s. His eight books are every deemed a regular reference. He has been a columnist and contributing editor for The Numismatist for many years, and he received ANA Heath Literary Awards in 1994 and 2013.

&#8220I got absorbed in numismatics at a young age, and I&#8217m nevertheless really absorbed nowadays,&#8221 Schenkman stated. &#8220It&#8217s like I inform men and women when I teach classes: It&#8217s not having anything, it&#8217s discovering it. No matter what a numismatist collects, there&#8217s constantly a goal. And as soon as that aim is reached, you need to have yet another objective.&#8221

He edited the Token and Medal Society publications for 27 years, the Civil War Token Society journal for five years, and served as president of both clubs.

Schenkman also is a member of the American Vecturist Association, National Scrip Collectors Association and Numismatic Literary Guild.

In addition to teaching ANA Summer season Seminar students about U.S. tokens and Civil War-era numismatics for 18 years, Schenkman has presented a lot of talks at the Association&#8217s conventions. He has ready competitive exhibits at state, regional and national shows, taking home a quantity of awards.

He received the ANA Glenn Smedley Memorial Award in 2003 and Medal of Merit in 2007. He received the ANA Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2012 Planet&#8217s Fair of Cash.

Schenkman is at the moment operating on two books. One particular is a catalog on obsolete paper notes connected to the mining sector. The other is the second edition of his book &#8220Virginia Tokens,&#8221 which was initially published in 1980. Schenkman notes that the second edition will nearly double the size of the original publication with new material.

&#8220You can&#8217t learn it all, you can&#8217t know it all. There are often new collector paths to go down,&#8221 Schenkman mentioned. &#8220I&#8217ve collected a lot of diverse issues. There&#8217s just no end to the way you can method numismatics.&#8221
