Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name, Mark Twain, was an American author. Clemens chose his pen name after working on a riverboat in Mississippi. “Mark Twain” is a riverboat term that means the water measures two fathoms (12 ft) deep. Twain penned the stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, which are often referred to as, “The Great American Novel.” Over the course of his lifetime, Twain completed dozens of fiction and non-fiction literature.
