Coins that Never Were, Morgan and Barber’s Missing Masterpieces!

Morgan and Barber

These coins were almost lost forever!

See Charles E. Barber & George T. Morgan’s missing masterpieces!

2016-Struck Proof Silver Barber Designed 1906 Double Eagle Pattern

Charles A. Barber is a famous coin designer and US Mint Chief Engraver, known for creating one of the United States’ most renown coin series: the aptly named Barber Dimes, Quarters, and Half Dollars.

When President Theodore Roosevelt tasked Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a new $20 Gold Double Eagle design, Barber – the US Mint Chief Engraver at the time – decided to throw his design into the ring. This 1906 Gold Double Eagle Design was not approved and fell into obscurity in the U.S. Mint archives.

ModernCoinMart (MCM) was able to recover Barber’s original sketches and were even able to see the single-surviving pattern stored at the Smithsonian! Using this, MCM commissioned a commemorative proof using Barber’s intended design. These Proofs have been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and are now available to honor this once lost design!

2016-Struck Proof Silver Morgan Designed 1876 $100 Union

George T. Morgan, a protégé of Barber, is considered by some to be the greatest coin designer in American history. His exceptionally beautiful and intricate designs grace many US coins and medals.

2016 Winged Liberty High Relief Silver Proof – Saint-Gaudens’ Original Winged Liberty Design!

2016 Winged Liberty High Relief Silver Proof

Extremely limited: Mercanti signed 2016 Saint-Gaudens Winged Liberty Silver Proofs

Hand-signed by John Mercanti!

In January of 1905, when Teddy Roosevelt told Augustus Saint-Gaudens that he wanted the famous sculptor to redesign all of America’s coins, the eminent artist knew that he could not decline the commission. As America’s foremost sculptor of the time, Saint-Gaudens was the magnet: his work gave off an aura of warmth and creativity that drew people to him – something that’s still happening today! But there’s a nearly forgotten “secret” that many visitors to the Saint-Gaudens museum are unaware of: Lady Liberty was supposed to have a feathered headdress and wings!

Images of winged female figures appear in many of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ sculptures, drawings and monuments. In fact, just two years before he began the design of a Winged Liberty coin, he had unveiled a nearly identical winged figure leading General Sherman in a major gilded bronze monument in New York City – a monument which remains a Manhattan landmark to this very day.

Ultimately, the feathered headdress and wings would be removed from Saint-Gaudens’ design at the insistence of mint officials, who believed these details to be too intricate for the minting technology of the day. Recently, while exploring the archives within the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, we uncovered for ourselves the whole story of the Winged Liberty. Inspired, we immediately began partnering with museum officials to see Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ and Teddy Roosevelt’s original artistic vision brought to full glory in silver!

2016 1 oz. High Relief Proof Silver Saint Gaudens - Winged Liberty

Each 2016 Winged Liberty High Relief Silver Proof has been certified and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and sealed in an archival acrylic holder for display and preservation. In addition, each holder bears Mercanti’s hand-signed autograph directly on the label. The mintages for the 2016 Winged Liberty High Relief Silver Proofs are extremely limited. Only a mere 10,000 Proofs have been authorized.

Tens of thousands of collectors own Saint-Gaudens $20 Double Eagles from 1907-1932. The 2016 Winged Liberty Silver Proofs belong in every one of those collections. But with only 10,000 available, you must order immediately to secure yours – before they’re sold out!

Shipwreck Silver: 1 oz S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Silver Rounds

Shipwreck silver in the form of 1 oz S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Silver Rounds are now available for sale at more than one outlet.

The newly released 1 oz S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Silver Rounds should be a welcome addition to any collection, especially to the collections of those who are collecting shipwreck silver from the S.S. Gairsoppa. The S.S. Gairsoppa, for those of you who are not familiar with the story, is the British steam merchant ship that was sunk by a German U-Boat on February 17th, 1941. She was loaded with almost 7 million ounces of silver ingots at the time. Fast forward to September 26th, 2011, the salvage crew of Odyssey Marine Exploration found the shipwreck and started recovering the silver. They have up to date recovered almost 110 tons of silver from the shipwreck of the S.S. Gairsoppa. The 1 oz S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Silver Rounds mentioned above are part of the result of that recovery.

Where can I find the best deal on these silver rounds?

The best deal in our opinion can be found at ModernCoinMart (MCM), where they not only have a great selection of the 1 oz S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Silver Rounds available (including low serial number rolls), but also at the best prices we could find, especially given free shipping (within the States) with no restrictions (no minimum orders, etc.). Be sure to order yours here.

JM Bullion also offers the 1 oz S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Silver Rounds for sale, but it comes with a limited selection (no CoAs or low serial number rolls) and the free shipping offered by them comes with the restriction of a minimum order of $100. This is something which they fail to mention, while falsely claiming at their website that “JM Bullion is the only major online retailer offering FREE shipping on every single order shipping to the United States” (under “How Much Does Shipping Cost?” sub section of “Shipping FAQ”).

P.S. Members of the ModernCoins.com Forum (MCF), which is free to join, also stand to enjoy additional benefits if they choose to buy the mentioned silver rounds from MCM. Be sure to get more details here
