Happy Birthday to us!

I MAKE no excuses for writing this month’s Editorial as a single extended “congratulations” to Token Publishing Ltd (and myself if I’m truthful), as this month (April 2013—it could be the Might concern but we are constantly a tiny ahead of ourselves) marks no significantly less than 30 years because Token Publishing Ltd came into becoming. We (Mary, my then wife, and I) started function on the May possibly situation of Coin & Medal News from our tiny offices above a plumber’s shop in Station Road, Liphook, Hants (the shop is nonetheless there!). I had previously been editing the magazine for Epic Publishing, based in London (obtaining previously been employed in the stamp world by the auctioneers H. R. Harmer Ltd), but when they decided to sell off their titles I jumped in with each feet and took over the title I was operating on. At the time I had no notion what I was letting myself in for, and while there have been trials and tribulations along the way, I can honestly say it was the best selection I ever produced.

A wonderful deal has changed in these previous 30 years, both personally and professionally—when I formed Token Publishing Ltd I had my wife working with me and each sons have been at college . . . now I have a distinct wife, Carol, as my organization partner, my elder son, Philip, is a Director of the company and my two grandsons are at school! That modest office above the plumber’s shop, with just two of us functioning there, has grown to a massive workplace complicated and a warehouse, with 14 employees and a host of “freelancers”. We have gone from publishing just the a single title each month to two magazine titles (COIN NEWS and MEDAL NEWS have been split in 1989), 3 “yearbooks”, dozens of “one off” books and now we sell accessories as well. But to be honest there isn’t much about any of it I would have changed. I started my expert profession in print, as an apprentice printer’s reader back in 1958, and while I’m not very prepared to totally retire yet, when I do I will do so as the Managing Editor of a productive publishing company—you can’t ask for considerably far more than that! Throw into the mix that I have been lucky enough to travel all more than the globe with this job and that I have met some amazing folks, many of whom have turn into extremely good pals, then you will realise just why I really feel quite fortunate to have created that decision 30 years ago to bite the bullet, take out 1 of Maggie Thatcher’s “Enterprise initiative loans” and go for it.

Of course, it isn’t just down to me, or my wife, son or staff—the longevity of this company has stemmed from darned hard operate, and from the fact that in the early days we worked our socks off to make it function, usually staying at the workplace till 3 or four o’clock in the morning on press days—and in recent years Phil has given up just about every spare weekend to make positive he was advertising the enterprise as a lot as achievable at fairs up and down the nation. Without having all that, and the challenging perform our staff place in also, we wouldn’t have survived. Of that there is no doubt, but the actual secret of our achievement is, and often has been, the loyalty of our readers and advertisers. No amount of tough work, late nights or weekends away would have meant something unless the dealers have been ready to advertise and the readers were there to help us, and a lot of of you have completed so given that the quite beginning. So, while I am quite proud to have reached this milestone, and will let myself to be a small smug about it, I would also like to take this chance to thank you, all of you, for the component you have played in acquiring Token Publishing Ltd to this point—it genuinely is “Happy Birthday” to us all!
