High relief Enterprise coins pay tribute to iconic starship

In 1966, the team behind landmark sci-fi series Star Trek introduced one of the most memorable space craft ever devised for TV and film. So futuristic was the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, that 50 years later, the renowned starship is still highly admired – beloved even – by fans of the Star Trek canon.

Constructed at the San Francisco Yards orbiting Earth, the Enterprise was a Constitution-class starship, a heavy cruiser built to explore strange new worlds, to serve as home to 400-plus crew, and to withstand the stress of battle.

Launched in 2245, she reached the peak of her 40-year career during Captain James T. Kirk’s famous five-year Starfleet mission to boldly go where no man has gone before™, as told across 79 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Her appearance was a revolutionary departure from customary rocket-style concepts. Comprising a saucer-shaped primary hull surmounted by a bridge dome, and pylon-mounted engine nacelles projecting from a secondary hull, she remains one of sci-fi’s most iconic images.

Kirk’s Enterprise featured 14 science labs, an observation deck, a massive lower deck which included main engineering, and a shuttle bay. Impulse engines provided propulsion to a maximum speed of Warp 8, while defences came in the form of deflector shields and armaments comprising photon torpedoes and phasers.

Among the ship’s extraordinary array of advanced technology, the transporter was unforgettable. Created when it was deemed too difficult (and expensive) to portray the Enterprise or its shuttlecraft landing on the surface of a planet, it ‘dematerialized’ humans or objects into energy patterns, then beamed them to a target for ‘rematerialization’ – giving rise to the popular catchphrase “Beam me up, Scotty”.
